The Soul of the Artwork
Every other bougainvillea work in this collection interprets the flower: softened to blush pink, minimized to corner accents, placed against grey stone or turquoise borders. "Bodrum Bougainvillea" simply shows it.
This is Gamze Haberal's most direct bougainvillea — the plant as it actually appears climbing the walls of Bodrum in July, when the afternoon light has stripped away any subtlety and what remains is pure, saturated fuchsia against white. Two substantial branches cross the ivory interior of the shawl — one in the upper third, one in the lower — each one carrying clusters of fully open bougainvillea bells in deep rose-red, their color at full intensity, their forms painted with the kind of confidence that comes from painting the same subject from life, through every season, across many years.
These are not delicate bells caught in a morning breeze. These are the real bougainvillea: large, full-faced, their petals broad and rounded, their warm brown branches painted with the botanical precision of someone who has studied each fork and each node. The green leaves between the blooms are vivid and specific — not generalized botanical suggestions but the actual leaves of the bougainvillea, with their characteristic pointed tip and slight curl. Fine dark stamens extend from the center of several blooms, a detail only a painter who has looked closely would include.
All of this unfolds within a frame of hand-painted sky blue — a soft, atmospheric wash applied around the full perimeter, its tone shifting between pale blue and soft cerulean as the pigment settled into the silk unevenly during application. It is the blue of the Aegean sky above the whitewashed rooftop where the bougainvillea grows — the color that makes every other color in Bodrum more vivid than it would be anywhere else.
Two branches. Two sessions of direct observation. One shawl. This specific intensity of fuchsia against this specific blue will never be assembled again.
The Luxury of Pure Silk
The deep, saturated fuchsia of these bougainvillea blooms — applied at full pigment concentration to capture the true intensity of the flower — finds its ideal ground in 100% pure 9-momme mulberry silk. At this weight, the silk does not flatten the color but animates it: the natural sheen of the fiber gives the red-pink a luminosity that shifts between ruby and rose depending on the light, the translucency of the weave allowing the ivory beneath to warm the darker passages of each bloom. The sky blue border, applied as a free wash, retains its atmospheric, cloud-like quality — varying in depth around the perimeter in the way that a real sky varies in a single moment of looking. The ivory white interior glows between border and blossom, providing the negative space that allows both to perform at their full intensity.
Why This Artwork?
Every collection needs the work that says what it means without translation. "Bodrum Bougainvillea" is that work. No metaphor, no abstraction, no compositional strategy — just the most iconic flower of the most beautiful coastal town in Turkey, painted by the artist who has lived with it, in deep fuchsia on pure silk, within a frame the color of the sky above it.
For the collector who has been to Bodrum — who has walked the narrow streets in July and looked up at bougainvillea cascading over a white wall — this shawl will produce an immediate, involuntary recognition. For the collector who has not been, it is an invitation. In either case, it is the collection's most direct emotional proposition.
The edges are finished with a fully hand-rolled hem, executed entirely by hand, as bold and as considered as the painting it completes.
