The Soul of the Artwork

There are paintings made in stillness. And then there are paintings made in the moment just before the sun disappears — when the light is unreasonably vivid, and every color seems to be announcing itself for the last time that day.

"Magenta Pulse" was painted in that moment.

Artist Gamze Haberal built this composition around five large-scale abstract blooms that descend diagonally across the full length of the shawl — but to call them flowers is to undersell them. These are chromatic events: explosions of deep violet, hot fuchsia, and amber-orange applied wet-on-wet, the colors bleeding into one another at their boundaries with the spontaneous violence of pigment that has been permitted to go where it wants. Each bloom is different in size, in the balance of violet to pink, in the way the orange punctuates the center like an ember that hasn't decided yet whether to ignite or cool. Fine ink lines — barely visible, almost accidental — connect some of the blooms by their implied stems, giving the composition just enough botanical suggestion to anchor it without ever constraining it.

The entire scene is held within a hand-painted border of deep fuchsia-pink — not a clean, measured frame but a brushed, organic wash that presses inward from all four sides, its inner edge advancing irregularly into the white ground. This border does not contain the composition so much as it charges it: the already vivid blooms become more vivid still against the white they sit on, and the white becomes more luminous against the pink that surrounds it.

Five blooms. One border. One session. One shawl. This specific energy, painted by this specific hand on this specific afternoon, exists once in the world.

The Luxury of Pure Silk

The wet-on-wet technique that defines this composition is only fully realized on 100% pure 9-momme mulberry silk. At this weight, the silk absorbs the violet and fuchsia pigments at different rates depending on the moisture present in each area — creating the soft, feathered boundaries between colors that give each bloom its sense of internal movement. The orange accents, applied with a drier brush into already-wet pigment, hold just enough of their clarity to read as distinct while still bleeding at the edges into the purple and pink surrounding them. The ivory-white ground glows through the translucent layers of color, giving the blooms a luminosity that appears lit from within. When the shawl moves, the blooms shift between their readings — abstract in one light, botanical in another, purely chromatic in a third.

Why This Artwork?

"Magenta Pulse" is for the woman who does not apologize for color. It is the collection's most emotionally direct work — the one that makes its statement immediately and without qualification. It will be noticed from across a room. It will be remembered. And it will look completely different on every woman who wears it, because the way bold color interacts with a body in motion is never predictable and always exactly right.

It is also — beneath its surface confidence — a work of considerable technical complexity. The wet-on-wet blooms required complete control of timing: too dry and the colors would not blend; too wet and they would collapse into one another. The hand-painted border required a single, committed pass. Everything here was done once, with full commitment, and without revision.

The edges are finished with a fully hand-rolled hem, executed entirely by hand — the quiet, precise final act of a work painted in entirely the opposite spirit: loud, alive, and entirely free.
