Azure Reflections
Twenty-five organic forms in Aegean blue and sea-glass green — each one a stone worn smooth by water, scattered across pure white silk like a tide pool seen from above.

The Soul of the Artwork
Look down from the edge of a wooden boat somewhere off the Bodrum coast, into water clear enough to see the bottom. What you see is not abstract shapes. They are stones — rounded by centuries of wave, each one unique in form, some overlapping at the shallows, others lying alone in deeper water — their colors shifting between the green of sea glass and the blue of the sky above reflected in the water around them. "Azure Reflections" is a painting of exactly that view.
Artist Gamze Haberal built this composition from approximately twenty-five organic forms scattered across the full surface of the shawl — each one a different size, a different silhouette, a different relationship to its neighbors. They are not circles: they are the shapes that water makes when it rounds a stone over decades, the forms that only patient erosion can produce. Each one is rendered with the same double-field technique: a cerulean-blue outer boundary that contains a lighter, softer wash of sea-glass green at the interior, each form holding a luminous white center — the water pooled in the stone's hollow, or the sky reflected in the wet surface. The outer blue of each form is slightly darker than its inner green, creating a sense of depth and dimension that makes the forms appear almost three-dimensional against the white ground.
The distribution across the silk is neither random nor organized: dense in the upper half, where the forms cluster and occasionally overlap; more spacious in the lower half, where some forms lie alone in open white water. This irregularity — the particular organic logic of how stones actually settle on a sea floor — is what gives the composition its sense of having been found rather than designed.
Twenty-five forms. Twenty-five individual paintings. One sea floor. This specific arrangement of stones in this specific water exists only here.
The Luxury of Pure Silk
The double-field quality of each form — blue containing green, green containing white — requires a ground that can hold two different pigment densities in precise radial relationship. 100% pure 9-momme mulberry silk provides exactly that. The cerulean blue outer field, applied first and at slightly stronger concentration, holds its edge without spreading excessively. The sea-glass green interior, applied second into a partially drying ground, settles with a softness that creates a natural gradient between the two colors — not a hard line but a gentle transition, exactly as color transitions in the natural mineral forms that inspired this work. The luminous white centers — the unwashed silk itself — glow with a warmth that activates the cool greens and blues surrounding them, giving each form the particular quality of light that appears when water pools in a concavity in stone: still, collected, intimate.
Why This Artwork?
"Azure Reflections" is for the collector who finds the natural world in abstract form — who can look at a rounded stone and see the history of the sea in its silhouette, who understands that organic shapes carry a visual intelligence that purely geometric forms cannot. This is a painting of stones, of water, of the specific palette of the Turkish Aegean coast — but it requires no literal reading to be experienced. It works equally well as pure form: twenty-five elegantly painted shapes on white silk, in the most beautiful color combination in the collection.
It is also, in a wardrobe context, one of the collection's most versatile works: the blue-green-white palette is effortlessly elegant with almost any color, and the all-over composition means that however the shawl is draped, the stones are present — visible, quietly beautiful, asking for nothing but a moment of attention.
The edges are finished with a fully hand-rolled hem, executed entirely by hand — the still, unhurried final act of a work that took patience to find and patience to paint.
