Prismatic Echoes

The most complex geometric work in the collection — nested rectangles in six colors, hand-painted across every inch of pure silk with no ground left untouched.

The Soul of the Artwork

Josef Albers spent his career studying what happens when one rectangle is placed inside another. Paul Klee built entire worlds from interlocking colored squares. The ancient mosaic-makers of Byzantium understood that geometry is not cold — that when color and structure meet at the right scale and proportion, the result is something closer to music than to mathematics. "Prismatic Echoes" is painted in that understanding.

This is the most compositionally ambitious work in Gamze Haberal's collection — a full-surface painting in which not a single square centimeter of silk is left unworked. Every area of the shawl is inhabited by overlapping, nested, and adjacent rectangles in a palette of six distinct colors: warm coral-orange, vivid tangerine, deep rose-red, sage green, soft lavender-purple, and warm taupe — applied against a taupe ground that itself reads as a seventh tone, visible wherever two forms meet at their outer edges.

The forms are not simply placed beside one another. They nest: a large orange rectangle contains a smaller white interior frame; beside it, a green rectangle overlaps a lavender one; above them, a coral L-shape connects to a red square that connects to an orange inner frame. The composition reads as a single interconnected system in which every element is in relationship with every other — not a pattern that repeats, but a labyrinth of color decisions made one by one, across the full length and width of the silk.

What gives the composition its life — what prevents it from becoming merely decorative — is the evidence of the hand throughout. The painted lines of each rectangle vary in width and pressure. The colored fill pools slightly at the corners where the pigment collected. Some inner whites glow more brightly than others, depending on exactly how much pigment surrounded them during application. These variations are not errors. They are the record of a human being making two hundred consecutive decisions, one brush width at a time, without the option of revision. This specific configuration of colors in this specific relationship exists once, painted in a single session, and will not be reconstructed.

The Luxury of Pure Silk

A composition of this density — six colors in constant, overlapping relationship across the full surface of the silk — demands a ground that can hold all of them simultaneously without collapsing into visual noise. 100% pure 9-momme mulberry silk provides exactly that: its natural translucency ensures that even the most saturated orange or deepest rose retains a luminosity that prevents the composition from becoming heavy. The white interior of each large rectangle is the unwashed silk itself — warm, glowing, pearlescent — contributing its own light to the composition and providing the visual breathing space that prevents the dense surrounding colors from overwhelming the eye. In motion, the nested rectangles appear to rotate and shift against one another, new spatial relationships emerging as the silk folds and opens.

Why This Artwork?

"Prismatic Echoes" is for the collector who owns art — who lives with paintings, who understands color relationships the way a musician understands harmony. This is the piece that belongs in that conversation: a work in which the visual intelligence is as present as the craftsmanship, in which every color decision can be justified, and every proportion defended, and in which the final result is something that no algorithm could have designed, and no machine could have made.

It is also, at the right moment, one of the most joyful works in the collection. The six-color palette, saturated and alive, carries the warmth of a Mediterranean market in full activity — terracotta roof tiles, painted shutters, ripe fruit, bright awnings, shadows that carry purple. It is a painting of abundance: every inch full, every color present, nothing withheld.

The edges are finished with a fully hand-rolled hem, executed entirely by hand — the patient, meticulous final act of the collection's most patient and meticulous work.
