Slate & Blossom Reverie

Bougainvillea trailing the full length of pure silk, held within a frame of cool slate grey — the warmth of Bodrum's most beloved flower against the quiet of a stone wall.

The Soul of the Artwork

There is a particular visual experience in Bodrum that belongs only to that place: vivid pink bougainvillea growing against old stone — the warmth of the flower against the cool grey of the wall, color against mineral, softness against permanence. "Slate & Blossom Reverie" is a painting of that contrast.

Artist Gamze Haberal structured this composition around a single, unhurried bougainvillea branch that enters from the upper right corner and descends diagonally through the full length of the shawl, branching and forking as it goes, its warm brown stem moving through the ivory interior with the casual authority of a plant that has been growing for years. Along this branch, clusters of hand-painted bougainvillea bells open in warm pink and deeper rose — larger and more fully open than in the more minimalist bougainvillea works, each one rendered with the gentle layering technique that captures the petal's characteristic translucency. Between the blooms, fresh green leaves turn at varying angles, their forms painted with enough individual attention to feel observed rather than repeated.

All of this unfolds within a hand-painted border of cool slate grey — a wash of silvered blue-grey that surrounds the entire perimeter with the quiet presence of Bodrum stone: not cold, not harsh, but composed. The border does not compete with the bougainvillea. It is the wall the vine grows against — the structural element that makes the pink more pink, the white more luminous, the whole composition more resolved.

This specific branch, in this specific dialogue with its grey frame, was painted once. It will not be painted again.

The Luxury of Pure Silk

The contrast at the heart of this composition — warm pink against cool grey, organic vine against architectural border — is only fully realized on 100% pure 9-momme mulberry silk. The slate border wash, applied at medium saturation, gains a particular blue-silver luminosity from the silk's translucency: it reads as stone because the silk makes it atmospheric rather than flat. The bougainvillea bells, painted with a layered approach into the warm ivory interior, achieve the translucency of the real flower — the silk's own warmth contributing to the blush of each petal, the lighter outer edges of each bloom revealing the ground beneath. The ivory white of the unworked interior is, as always in these framed compositions, the most active element: contained by the grey, animated by the silk, it becomes the light the bougainvillea grows toward.

Why This Artwork?

"Slate & Blossom Reverie" speaks to the collector who dresses with restraint and lives with art. It is neither the boldest nor the quietest work in the collection — it occupies a precise middle ground where architectural sophistication meets botanical warmth, where the grey of old stone meets the pink of a flower that refuses to be subdued by it.

It is also one of the most seasonally versatile shawls in the collection. The slate border anchors it for autumn and winter — worn over a dark coat, the grey frame disappears, and the bougainvillea floats against the dark background with extraordinary effect. In summer, the white interior dominates, and the grey recedes. It changes character entirely with the light.

The edges are finished with a fully hand-rolled hem, executed entirely by hand — the quiet, considered finish of a work built from the beginning around the relationship between the composed and the living.
