The Azure Current
One bold branch crossing the full length of the silk — and along it, pink blossoms trembling over a river of hand-painted cerulean blue.

The Soul of the Artwork
In traditional East Asian ink painting, a single branch is enough. The branch contains everything: the season, the wind, the weight of time, the lightness of what blooms on it. "The Azure Current" is painted in that spirit — with a single compositional decision that gives the entire work its authority.
A single dark branch enters the shawl from the upper left corner and descends diagonally to the lower right — its stroke confident, unhurried, crossing the full length of the 200-centimeter silk with the directional certainty of calligraphy. It forks once, twice, its secondary branches reaching outward. Along and around this branch, Gamze Haberal has painted two generous pools of cerulean blue: free-form washes that bloom outward from the branch like sky reflected in still water, their organic edges softening into the ivory ground without ever quite losing their intensity.
Against and above this blue ground, the cherry blossoms appear: individually hand-painted, each one a five-petaled study in warm pink, their dark centers painted with a fine brush that captures the intimate detail of a flower examined closely. They cluster most densely where the branch forks at the top, then grow sparser and more scattered as the branch descends — some sitting within the blue pools, others drifting into the white space beyond, as if the same breeze that bends the branch is carrying them away.
The composition reads as both a landscape and an abstraction simultaneously — the cerulean pools are both sky and water, the branch both tree and brushstroke. This specific crossing of branch and blue, this specific scatter of pink — painted once, in a single session, and not again.
The Luxury of Pure Silk
The interplay of the dark branch stroke, the atmospheric blue washes, and the delicate pink blossoms is only fully realized on 100% pure 9-momme mulberry silk. The branch — painted with a loaded brush at full pigment concentration — holds its darkness and its edge precision while the silk's translucency softens its perimeter into the ground. The cerulean washes expand freely across the fiber, pooling with a depth that print can never replicate — you see the silk itself glowing through the color, giving the blue its particular luminosity. The pink blossoms, applied last and with the most deliberate care, sit at the intersection of the two previous elements and bring them into conversation: their warmth answering the coolness of the blue, their delicacy answering the weight of the branch.
Why This Artwork?
"The Azure Current" is for the collector who responds to compositional intelligence. Where many beautiful shawls offer beautiful surfaces, this one offers structure — a clear decision about where the eye should travel and what it should find along the way. It is also, of all the works in this collection, the one most directly in conversation with the great tradition of East Asian ink painting: the single branch, the minimal ground, the blossom as subject and symbol simultaneously.
Worn diagonally — which the branch composition actively invites — the shawl becomes an extension of the body's own line: the branch crossing the chest, the blue pools settling at the shoulder, the blossoms drifting toward the hand. It is a rare piece of wearable art that tells you how it wants to be worn.
The edges are finished with a fully hand-rolled hem, executed entirely by hand, as precise and patient as the branch stroke that defines the whole composition above it.
