Three bougainvillea sprays floating in a frame of Aegean blue — leaf, stem and the faintest opening bell, painted with the quietest possible hand on pure silk.

The Soul of the Artwork
Of all the bougainvillea works in this collection, this is the one painted closest to stillness.
In "Turquoise Gardenia," artist Gamze Haberal chose restraint as her primary creative decision. Three small bougainvillea sprays are placed within the ivory interior of the shawl — one at the upper left, one at the center, one at the lower right — each one a study in the plant at a different moment of its growth. The upper spray is predominantly foliage: large, bold green leaves rendered with confident brushstrokes, their surfaces catching an imagined light, their stems branching with the casual authority of a plant that knows exactly where it is going. The center spray is the most complete — a small cluster of pink bougainvillea bells opening among their leaves, the flowers barely larger than the leaf tips around them, the whole thing balanced on a single fine stem. The lower spray returns to leaves alone: quieter, simpler, a botanical coda.
All three float within a turquoise border of Aegean blue — hand-painted in a clear, luminous wash that frames the shawl with the brightness of the Bodrum sea on a mid-morning in June. The interior white ground is vast relative to what inhabits it: this is a composition in which silence is the dominant note, and the bougainvillea speaks in it the way a single flower speaks against a whitewashed wall — quietly, precisely, and with complete authority.
Three sprays. One atelier window. One morning. Painted once, preserved here alone.
The Luxury of Pure Silk
A composition this dependent on negative space demands a ground that earns its own presence: 100% pure 9-momme mulberry silk, with its natural ivory warmth and pearlescent luminosity, provides exactly that. The turquoise border wash, applied in a single clean pass around the perimeter, gains a particular clarity and brightness from the silk's translucency — it reads as water, as sky, as the particular blue of a Bodrum morning — rather than simply as paint. The green leaves, painted with a fuller brush, hold their depth and mass against the white ground without ever becoming heavy. The pink bougainvillea bells — barely open, barely present — are painted with the lightest possible touch, the silk beneath them contributing as much to their color as the pigment itself. The result is a shawl in which everything is exactly where it needs to be, and nothing is anywhere it should not be.
Why This Artwork?
"Turquoise Gardenia" is for the collector who has learned that restraint is the highest form of confidence. In a collection that includes works of great density, chromatic boldness, and compositional complexity, this shawl offers something rarer: the courage to leave the silk almost empty, to place three small sprays in a vast white ground and trust that they are enough. They are more than enough. The turquoise border gives the composition its structure and its brightness, the bougainvillea gives it its warmth and its life, and the white gives it its breath.
It is also one of the collection's most versatile pieces — the turquoise and pink palette pairs effortlessly with almost any wardrobe, and the minimalist composition means it enhances rather than competes.
The edges are finished with a fully hand-rolled hem, executed entirely by hand — the still, unhurried final act of a work painted in the spirit of morning calm.
