The Soul of the Artwork

There is a particular quality of light in a Mediterranean garden just before the wind picks up — warm, golden, suspended. "Turquoise Orchard" is a painting of that exact moment.

Artist Gamze Haberal composed this work around a deliberate and rare tension: the restraint of negative space. Where many of her shawls are defined by the movement of color across the entire canvas, here she made the opposite choice — allowing the luminous white of the pure silk to breathe, to dominate, to become part of the composition itself.

Two branches of hand-painted apricot blossoms anchor the upper and lower thirds of the shawl — one fuller, one sparser, as if caught at different points in the same gentle wind. Between them, individual petals drift freely across the white ground, each one a small, self-contained act of painting. The branches are rendered with fine, ink-like brushwork: a twig here, a leaf turned sideways, a bud not yet open. Nothing is overworked. Nothing is repeated.

Framing all of this is a hand-painted turquoise border — not a printed edge, but a brushed wash of Aegean blue applied by the artist's hand, soft at its inner edge where pigment meets silk, clean and confident at its outer line. It is a frame that does not contain the painting so much as it breathes with it.

This shawl exists as one object in the world. The exact scatter of petals, the exact weight of each brushstroke — painted once, in a single sitting, never to be repeated.

💎 The Luxury of Pure Silk

The success of this composition depends entirely on its ground: 100% pure 9-momme mulberry silk, chosen for its extraordinary luminosity. The ivory-white of the unwashed silk glows through the translucent petals, giving each apricot bloom a warmth that pigment alone cannot produce — it is the silk itself contributing to the color. The turquoise border, applied as a wash rather than a block, allows the same luminosity to show through at its edges, preventing the frame from ever feeling heavy. The result is a shawl that feels as light to the eye as it does against the skin.

🌿 Why This Artwork?

"Turquoise Orchard" is for the woman who understands that sophistication is not loudness. In a world of maximalist prints and aggressive branding, this shawl makes its statement through restraint — through the confidence of white space, through the precision of a single brushstroke on a petal. It is the piece that draws a second look, then a closer one, then the question: where is this from?

The edges are finished with a fully hand-rolled hem, executed stitch by stitch without a machine — a couture detail that gives the border its characteristic soft, rounded finish and ensures the turquoise wash meets the world on its own terms. This is slow work, made for those who notice.
