Citrus Shoreline

A cascading lemon grove against a wash of Aegean blue — painted along the edge of pure silk, where the orchard meets the sea.

The Soul of the Artwork

This composition makes a choice that takes confidence: it lives entirely on one side.

Artist Gamze Haberal placed the entire narrative of "Citrus Shoreline" along the left edge of the shawl — a cascading garland of hand-painted lemons and leaves tumbling from top to bottom, set against a generous watercolor wash of soft Aegean blue. The right half of the silk is left entirely untouched: pure, luminous ivory white, breathing, open, deliberate. This is not an unfinished composition. It is a compositional decision of the highest order — the kind that separates a decorative object from a work of art.

Each lemon along the garland is individually painted: rounded and full, rendered in radiant yellow with gentle shadow, each one slightly different from the last in size, angle, and the weight of pigment applied. Between them, loose green leaves turn and overlap in the relaxed way of a real branch — not a stylized pattern, but a painted observation. The blue ground behind the garland was applied as a single, free-form wash, its organic edge moving in and out against the white with the natural softness of watercolor on silk.

The result is a shawl that, when worn, wraps the wearer in a garden on one side and in light on the other. Painted once. Owned by one.

The Luxury of Pure Silk

100% pure 9-momme mulberry silk makes this asymmetric composition possible. The ivory white of the unworked right half is not simply bare fabric — it is the silk itself performing: glowing, soft, contributing its own luminosity to the overall work. The blue wash along the garland side gains depth from the silk's translucency, settling into the fiber rather than sitting on top of it. And the yellow of each lemon, applied with deliberate opacity, holds its warmth and vibrancy against both grounds — the painted blue and the untouched white — with equal confidence. In sunlight, the entire composition appears to be lit from within.

Why This Artwork?

"Citrus Shoreline" is for the woman who understands asymmetry as a form of sophistication. In a world of centered, balanced, symmetrical prints, this shawl makes its statement from the edge — drawing the eye along its garland, releasing it into white space, then drawing it back again. Worn draped over the shoulders, the composition shifts and reorganizes with every movement, revealing new arrangements of lemon and light.

The edges are finished with a fully hand-rolled hem, executed entirely by hand — a couture finish that gives the silk its characteristic soft, rounded drape and ensures that the boundary between painting and wearer is as refined as everything within the work.
