The Soul of the Artwork

Every artist has a window. Gamze Haberal's looks out onto bougainvillea.

In Bodrum, bougainvillea is not a garden plant — it is the architecture itself. It climbs every whitewashed wall, frames every doorway, spills over every rooftop terrace in cascades of vivid pink that the Aegean light makes almost impossible to look at directly. It is the first thing visitors remember and the last thing residents stop noticing. For Gamze, working in her atelier with that view, it was inevitable that the bougainvillea would eventually find its way onto silk.

"Verdant Ascent" is that moment. A single bougainvillea vine enters from the lower right of the shawl and climbs the full 200-centimeter length of the silk — exactly as it climbs a wall in Bodrum: with patience, with purpose, with the casual confidence of a plant that has been doing this for decades. Gamze Haberal painted it not from imagination but from direct observation: the specific way the stems fork and reach, the exact proportion of leaf to flower at each stage of the climb, the characteristic downward hang of the bougainvillea bell as it opens.

At the base, the vine is predominantly foliage: large, overlapping green leaves painted with bold, loaded brushstrokes that convey the density of a bougainvillea in full growth. As it ascends, the flowers take over — the bell-shaped blooms in warm pink and deep rose that are unmistakably, exclusively bougainvillea — each one painted individually, their translucent petals allowing the silk's own warmth to contribute to their color. Fine ink lines mark the stems and thorns with botanical precision: this is a portrait, painted from life, of the plant outside the studio window.

This specific vine, in this specific season, was painted once. The view from Gamze's window changes every day. This day is preserved here alone.

The Luxury of Pure Silk

The bougainvillea's particular combination of dense green foliage and delicate translucent blooms is only fully capturable on 100% pure 9-momme mulberry silk. The green leaves, applied with a full brush at strong pigment concentration, hold their depth and mass while the silk's translucency softens their edges into the warm ivory ground. The pink bell flowers — bougainvillea petals are among the most translucent in nature, almost tissue-paper thin — are painted with a deliberately lighter hand, allowing the silk beneath to glow through them exactly as light glows through the real flower. The result is a botanical portrait of remarkable fidelity, rendered in the one medium that could do it justice.

Why This Artwork?

Bougainvillea carries the memory of every Mediterranean summer anyone has ever spent. For some, it is the south of France. For others, the Greek islands, the Amalfi coast, and the old city of Dubrovnik. For those who know Turkey, it is Bodrum — specifically, undeniably, irreversibly. To wear "Verdant Ascent" is to carry that memory with you: the whitewashed walls, the impossible pink, the Aegean light behind it.

It is also a piece of genuine botanical art — not a stylized floral pattern but a hand-painted study of a specific plant, observed through a specific window, by an artist who has lived with that view long enough to know exactly how the vine moves.

The edges are finished with a fully hand-rolled hem, executed entirely by hand — the patient, precise final act of a work painted in the spirit of the plant it depicts: unhurried, attentive, and entirely rooted in place.
